Shapes & Range

Draw the plan. Share it over the mesh.

Share circles, ellipses, rectangles, closed polygons and freehand lines, plus range & bearing lines (R&B), as lightweight objects across the LoRa mesh — each one kept predictable on the air.

LANCE inside ATAK — a shared shape (Ellipse 1) on the live map, synced over the LoRa mesh
01

Every everyday shape — predictable on the air

LANCE shares circles, ellipses/ovals, rectangles, closed polygons and open freehand lines. Every extra vertex is extra airtime, so detailed outlines are simplified against a bounded tolerance to fit a single mesh payload — open lines keep their exact endpoints, polygons arrive closed and filled — and LANCE tells you when a shape had to be simplified or is too large to send.

02

Range & bearing lines for distance awareness

Share range & bearing lines (R&B) to communicate distance, direction, standoff or coverage at a glance. Like markers and shapes, they're reconstructed as native ATAK objects on every connected client.

03

Lightweight by design

Shape and range objects stay on the order of tens of bytes over the air, with acknowledged delivery like markers. They're slightly heavier than a marker but still cheap — so a planned area graphic doesn't dominate the channel.

04

Full-colour, true to your map

Shapes carry the full 24-bit RGB colour range, so the colour you draw is the colour your team sees. Whatever you assign in ATAK is preserved across the mesh and reconstructed faithfully on every connected client — no palette limits, no surprise substitutions.

Good to knowColour coding stays intact end to end — a red no-go area or a blue boundary arrives exactly as you set it, with the full RGB range available.
FAQ

Shapes & range, answered.

Which shapes can I share?
Circles, ellipses/ovals, rectangles, closed polygons and freehand lines, plus range & bearing lines (R&B). These cover the common field graphics while staying compact on the mesh.
What happens with very detailed shapes?
A polygon or freehand line with many points is simplified against a bounded tolerance so it fits a single mesh payload, rather than being dropped — its overall form is preserved and the endpoints of open lines stay exact. LANCE warns you when a shape was simplified, and tells you if one is simply too large for the mesh.
Do shapes confirm delivery?
Yes — shape and range objects use the same acknowledgement-based delivery as markers, so you can see when they've been received.
Are shape colours preserved?
Yes. Shapes carry the full 24-bit RGB colour range, so whatever colour you assign in ATAK is preserved across the mesh and rebuilt faithfully on every connected client — no palette limits or substitutions.
